No Need for Tougher Sentences

Harsher sentences for violent criminals will make police work more dangerous, Hördur Johansson, the chief of Reykjavik Police, told reporters.

A recent string of violent crimes by repeat offenders have caused some in the community to call for tougher sentences. However, Mr. Johnasson suggested that if criminals know their crimes will lead to longer prison sentences, they will become more afraid of the police, and become more violent.
