No International Flights to Akureyri This Year

International flights to Akureyri won’t be realized this summer, according to turisti.is. There had been plans by the travel agency Trans-Atlantic to organize weekly flights between the North Iceland town and Denmark in cooperation with Estonian Air, but it has become clear that because of lack of unity between the parties of interest in Iceland, an agreement is unlikely to be reached in the near future.

A response from the travel agency to turisti.is states, “Trans-Atlantic still believes all conditions for the preparation of [international] flights remain unchanged and in place, but it’s clear that more time is needed to coordinate the involvement of various parties who have taken part in negotiations. The plan is for the flights to begin in 2017, but for sale and promotion to start abroad in the fall.” Trans-Atlantic also emphasizes how essential international flights would be for the economy of the area, and that the foundations must be laid for flights all year round in the future.
