According to visir.is, the poor quality of the photos taken by the tourists (which were submitted to the police and can be viewed here), makes it impossible to determine whether the creature in the photographs is actually a polar bear.
Kristján Þorbjörnsson, senior police officer at Blöndúos, told visir.is yesterday that looking at the photographs is just a formality. Even though the polar bear is not visible in the photos, it would not cause the police to call off the search, he said. It is believed that the animal came ashore at Geitafjall yesterday.
