No Comment from President over Campaign Statements

President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson refuses to comment on whether or not he will complete his term or step down, as he had suggested he might during the election campaign in 2012 if the political situation in Iceland became stable.

RÚV requested an interview with the president on Thursday to ask him about his plans. The request was denied with the president’s secretary, Örnólfur Thorsson, stating that the president does not intend to give an interview on the subject, nor will he comment on any statements he made during the election campaign. According to Örnólfur, the president made it very clear that he intends to complete his term in office.

RÚV states that the president has only twice granted them an interview this year, once on the subject of the opening of a volcano museum in Vestmannaeyjar (the Westman Islands) and during a visit to East Iceland.

Ólafur Ragnar is currently serving his fifth consecutive as president. Next month marks halfway through the current election term.
