Ninety-six year old singer still going strong

By Iceland Review

Ólöf Sigurrós Ólafsdóttir, 96, does not let her age prevent her from doing what she likes best – singing – and goes to every music night organized by the Association of Senior Citizens in Iceland.

“Singing is my life. Music is such a glorious thing,” Ólafsdóttir told Fréttabladid. Ólafsdóttir recently had an accident resulting in her losing her voice, but has since recovered. Ólafsdóttir has returned to the biweekly singing practices, and, she said, “I plan to sing as long as my health allows it.”

Former MP Helgi Seljan and Sigurdur Jónsson, dentist and pianist, lead the group singing on the music nights. “People come to have a good time and everyone sings the way he or she pleases,” Seljan told Fréttabladid: “Singing is freedom.”
