The national team in women’s football lost 0-5 to Germany, the European champions, at the Algarve Cup in Portugal, yesterday. Iceland has now played 900 minutes against Germany – ten games – over the last few years without scoring. Germany, on the other hand, has scored 39 goals against Iceland.
Meanwhile, Iceland lost 3-1 against Wales in Cardiff, where the world’s most expensive footballer, the Real Madrid star player Gareth Bale, played cat and mouse with Iceland last night. Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson, who plays for AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, scored Iceland’s only goal, and his fifth international goal.
In other football news, Iceland’s national U21 team in football lost 3-2 against Kazakhstan in Astana, in the qualifying round for the U21 European Championships in 2015. Iceland ranks second in group 10, which is led by France. Iceland’s next game is against Armenia in Reykjavík on September 3.
In basketball, Haukar of Hafnarfjörður lost 48:89 to Snæfell from Stykkishólmur in the women’s division.
