Nine cruise ships have booked to arrive in Fjarðabyggð municipality (which encompasses the towns of Eskifjörður, Neskaupstaður and Reyðarfjörður), East Iceland, next summer. Two ships docked in the town of Eskifjörður this summer but more are expected in 2014, according to Steinþór Pétursson, manager of Fjarðabyggð harbor.

“It takes a certain amount of time to break into this market. We are seeing the effectiveness of the marketing campaign now. The priority is to promote the area as an interesting destination to which cruise ship can bring their passengers.”
The largest ship booked to arrive next summer carries 900 passengers, creating many employment opportunities for the area, ruv.is reports. “Many people venture out on further away from the harbor area while others choose to explore the area immediately surrounding the port,” Steinþór said,
adding that there has been much discussion about trying to spread out tourists to different regions in Iceland.
