Nice Result; Nice Monday

Coach Lars Lagerbäck is optimistic about the Icelandic men’s national football team’s game against England in Nice on Monday, saying he never lost a game against England when he coached the Swedish national team.

“Any team we would have been matched against would be a tough opponent,” Lars told mbl.is. “It’s quite good, though, to meet England; I never lost against them when I coached Sweden. We played against them five or six times. Let’s hope that success continues,” he added.

He was understandably very pleased following the game last night, praising the team’s “marvelous performance.”

One person interviewed by Síminn last night said he agreed with those who had said presidential elections were not needed on Saturday in Iceland, because “Lars is the king.”

Defender Kári Árnason said the result was “like fiction” and the “biggest moment of [his] life.” He said all the team’s dreams came true, resembling “the most sentimental Hollywood sports movie.”

Midfielder Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen told Síminn, “We are the team with the strongest will.” He praised the team spirit and said, “We go the extra mile.”
