New Year’s Sales Well Attended

Sales began in stores in the capital region shopping malls Kringlan and Smáralind on Saturday. Shop attendants say people crowded the malls and that the turnout in the first days of the sale was higher than expected.

“It appears to me as if the first day of the sales is similar to last year when between 25,000 and 30,000 people came to us,” managing director of Kringlan Sigurjón Örn Thórsson told Morgunbladid.

During the new year’s sales clothing items and other goods are commonly sold at a 30 to 40 percent discount—some are sold at as much as 75 percent off.

The new year’s sales will last until mid-February. According to the regulations of the Consumer Agency, the sales cannot continue for longer than six weeks, Fréttabladid reports.
