New Year’s Sales to Begin on January 3

The large shopping malls in Iceland’s capital region, Kringlan in Reykjavík and Smáralind in Kópavogur, have set the date for their New Year’s sales—discounts will generally not be offered in their stores until Saturday, January 3.

At some stores in Iceland, January sales have already begun even though December isn’t over yet, but in Kringlan and Smáralind most stores will be closed on Friday because of stocktaking, reports.

However, as managing director of Smáralind Henning Freyr Henningsson said, sales may begin on January 2 at some international chain stores that have policies on sales beginning on the same day in every country.

Managing director of Kringlan Sigurjón Örn Thórsson said Christmas shopping had been successful this year and he does not expect stores to offer higher discounts in their January sales than in previous years, which is usually between 30 and 50 percent.
