Iceland’s Directorate of Labor During issued 3,117 new work permits during the first seven months of this year. At the end of July 2006 only 732 new work permits had been issued.
If all work permits are taken into account, new and renewed, the numbers are similar, about 5,000 during the first seven months in 2006 and 2007, Morgunbladid reports.
This year many foreign-born workers who participated in construction projects in east Iceland have returned to their home countries but it seems as almost as many foreign-born workers have come to Iceland as have left.
