New Transport Center to Be Erected in Reykjavík

A new transport center, which will facilitate terminals for every type of transportation, will be constructed in the Vatnsmýrin district in central Reykjavík near the domestic airport by 2009, the Reykjavík City Council announced on Monday.

The new transport center will be a terminal for aviation, public transport, tourist buses and taxis as well as for other modes of transport. Mayor of Reykjavík Ólafur F. Magnússon and Minister of Transport Kristján Möller presented the plans for the center jointly, Morgunbladid reports.

Airlines that currently do not have operations at Reykjavík Domestic Airport will be able to establish facilities in the lot reserved for the center.

“In consistency with this role of a transport center, Reykjavík City would like to emphasize that all construction and operations in relation to aviation in Vatnsmýrin will take place in the planned transport center, combining it under one roof instead of scattering it across the district,” a statement from Reykjavík City reads.
