According to a new survey conducted by the National Health Institute, Icelanders consume alcohol less frequently than other Europeans. However, younger people tend to drink more alcohol more often than older people, and binge drinking is part of the pattern.
The survey shows that the sale of wine and beer has increased in the last decade while the sale of stronger liquor has decreased accordingly.
Men drink 72 percent of all alcohol and women 28 percent, calculated in alcohol percentage. Young people aged 18 – 34 drink the most beer, 1,8 litres on average.
