Minister of Education Thorgerdur Katrín Gunnarsdóttir and Mayor of Mosfellsbaer Haraldur Sverrisson signed an agreement on new secondary school yesterday, which will open in central Mosfellsbaer in fall 2009, a neighboring town of Reykjavík.
In the first phase of the school’s establishment a 4,000-square-meter building will be constructed with the capacity of enrolling 400 to 500 students, 24 Stundir reports.
The agreement includes that Mosfellsbaer Town Council will have considerable influence on the development and the policy of the new school from the beginning and oversee its construction on behalf of the ministry.
The Ministry of Education operates upper secondary schools, like the new school in Mosfellsbaer which are non-compulsory and for 16 to 20-year-olds, and higher education institutes, while local authorities are responsible for compulsory education, i.e., primary and lower secondary schools.
