Three new safety information signs have been placed along the popular hiking path up Esja mountain, just north of Reykjavík, Vísir reports. The signs are a joint venture between the Iceland Touring Association (FÍ) and Safetravel.
Esja has claimed more lives than any other mountain in Iceland over the past several decades. Many hikers may not realize that conditions on the mountain differ greatly from winter to summer, and hiking there in winter requires avalanche equipment and equipment such as crampons and ice axes.
The signs will be unveiled at 1 pm today just above the parking lot by the mountain’s main hiking path, to Þverfellshorn peak. Designed by Árni Tryggvason, the signs inform travellers of what to keep in mind when hiking up the mountain in each season.
