The online news site, Vísir, reports that a group of individuals is forming a company to construct a new road through the Kjölur Pass, in the interior of Iceland. Kjartan Ólafsson, the group’s spokesperson, says that the environmental effects should be minimal, as the road would be constructed on the site of the existing mountain road. Unlike the mountain road, however, the new route would be open year round and suitable for all types of vehicles.
Such a route would reduce the driving time between Reykjavík and Akureyri or other parts of the north. If planning proceeds as expected, the road could be ready in 2007 or 2008.
