New Reykjavík University Building Inaugurated

The new Reykjavík University building at Nauthólsvík was opened formally during a ceremony on Thursday when a corner stone, a five-kilo meteoroid which fell in South America 4,000 years ago, was laid to the building.

At the ceremony, Mayor Jón Gnarr introduced a project, on which Reykjavík City, RU and the Iceland Forestry Association are cooperating, on continued development of Öskjuhlíd as an outdoor recreation area, Morgunbladid reports.

Teaching has taken place at the new university building since early this year but now the university has relocated its entire operations to Nauthólsvík, as stated on

Approximately 3,000 students are enrolled to RU and around 270 employees work there. More than three years have passed since the ground for the new university building was broken in Nauthólsvík.

In related news, merger plans between RU and Bifröst University have been canceled due to unexpected opposition from the rector of Bifröst University Magnús Árni Magnússon, reports. Informal merger talks had taken place between the two universities.
