New Record in Passengers for Westman Islands Ferry

Never have more people sailed with the Westman Islands ferry Herjólfur than this year. After its last trip of the day on Tuesday, 267,476 people had sailed with the ferry in 2012, which is a larger number of passengers than in the entire year prior.

In 2011, the total number of passengers on Herjólfur was 267,448. This year it looks as if the number of passengers might exceed 300,000, ruv.is reports.

A statement from Herjólfur’s management explains that there are two reasons for this increase in passengers: sailing to the new harbor Landeyjahöfn has been successful, which shortens the time of crossing significantly, and a gradual increase in passengers throughout the year.
