New Poll: Most Icelanders Against Icesave Legislation

The majority of Icelanders, 62 percent, are planning to vote against the Icesave legislation in the upcoming referendum, while 33 percent want to pass it and five percent plan to hand in an empty ballot, a new survey indicates.

However, most people, 66 percent, want the legislation to be abolished before the referendum takes place, according to the survey, which was conducted by Capacent Gallup last weekend and on Monday, RÚV reports.

This is the third time within approximately one week that Gallup has asked these questions. Approximately one week ago, January 5-6, the majority of respondents said they were going to pass the Icesave legislation in the referendum.

In Gallup’s poll of January 7-8, around the same number of people were for and against the Icesave legislation. Now it appears as if a clear majority is against it.

In the most recent survey, 56 percent of respondents said they agree with the president’s decision to veto the Icesave legislation, while 34 percent disagree with him and ten percent didn’t have an opinion.

Around 40 percent of voters agreed with the president in the first poll, January 5-6, and almost 50 percent in the second poll, January 7-8.

As to whether the president’s decision has influenced national welfare, 38 percent of respondents said the influence was negative, 37 percent believed the influence was positive and 25 percent didn’t have an opinion on this issue.

One week ago, approximately 67 percent of respondents believed the president’s decision had a negative influence on national welfare, and 50 percent were under that impression in the poll of January 7-8.

The survey was undertaken online with a sample of 3,100 people, 18 and older. They were chosen at random from a Gallup pre-selection and 64 percent answered the questions.
