New Poll: 25 Percent Say PM Can Improve Economy

Only 25 percent of participants in a new opinion poll, undertaken by Capacent Gallup on behalf of Stöd 2 TV station earlier this month, say they trust Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde to lead Iceland out of the current unstable economic situation.

More than 60 percent of participants who support the Independence Party, of which Haarde is chairman, said they trusted the prime minister to solve Iceland’s economic problems, Fréttabladid reports.

Only 16 percent of those who support the other party in Iceland’s coalition government, the Social Democrats, share their faith in Haarde.

Eight percent of Progressive Party voters and 6.5 percent of those who vote the Left-Greens, the two largest opposition parties, say they trust the prime minister to solve Iceland’s economic problems.

Capacent Gallup called 1,100 people and 50 percent participated in the poll.
