New organization to fight against heavy industry

A new organization, Framtídarlandid or “The Future Country”, was formed on Saturday, June 17, Iceland’s national holiday.

According to Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, the assembly hall “Austurbaer” was “packed” with several hundred people who gathered Saturday afternoon to participate in the founding meeting of the organization.

According to Morgunbladid, the purpose of Framtídarlandid is to create to create a “politically neutral forum for those who doubt that the future plans of the government serve the best interests of the country and its people”. According to María Ellingsen, who was elected the treasurer of the interim board of directors, the founders want both to “preserve nature and utilize”. “We want to put forward ideas and lobby for a future [in which] Iceland will not be limited to a single alternative that excludes everything else, [because] more heavy industry could result in other industries not being feasible,” said María to Morgunbladid.
