The new prison facilities in Akureyri, northeast Iceland, were formally opened at a special ceremony on Thursday. Director of the State Prison Administration Páll Winkel gave the opening speech.
Erlendur S. Baldursson, criminologist at the State Prison Administration, told 24 Stundir that the conditions of the Akureyri prison have improved considerably with the new prison facilities, both for inmates and prison staff.
“The area which is reserved for prisoners within the police station has been rebuilt and enlarged. Now the prisoners have the facilities to cook for themselves, work and study,” Baldursson said.
