New Minister of Industry declares “heavy industry policy” over

Morgunbladid reports that the new Minister of Industry and Trade, Jón Sigurdsson of the Progressive Party, has declared that the government is not pursuing a policy favoring heavy industry and hydroelectric dams. That policy came to an end in 2003.

Maverick MP Kristinn Gunnarsson, lately of the Progressive Party, told Morgunbladid that the majority of the parliamentary delegation of the Progressives was now in favor of preserving the wetlands in the upper stretches of the river Thjórsá and halting further development there.

The chairman of the Icelandic Nature Conservation Association, Árni Finnsson, welcomed the “change of heart of the ministers of the Progressive party” adding that “the public expects them to put their money where their mouth is.”
