Dagur B. Eggertsson will be appointed mayor of Reykjavík at a meeting of the city council today.
The majority coalition of the Independence Party and the Progressive Party split up last week when the representative of the Progressive Party defected and formed a new coalition with the Social Democrats, Left-Greens and the Liberal Party following the debate about the merger of Reykjavík Energy Invest (REI) and Geysir Green Energy (GGE).
Eggertsson, the incoming mayor, is a representative of the Social Democrats. This 35 year old physician replaces Vilhjálmur Th. Vilhjálmsson, of the Independence Party, who has been the mayor of Reykjavík since May 2006.
According to RÚV, the new majority coalition has yet to issue a statement of policies. The council members of the Independence Party stated yesterday that they would press the new majority to make their strategies clear at the meeting of the city council today.
