New Legislation to Ban Use of Sunbeds for Children

Minister of Health Álfheidur Ingadóttir will submit a bill to parliament next week on an age limit of 18 for tanning salons. She is thereby following the advice of the Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority, which proposed the ban in November.

“There are clearly strong connections between sunburn and melanoma, which is the most serious type of skin cancer. Therefore I’m submitting this proposal,” the minister argued according to Morgunbladid.

The Public Health Institute of Iceland made a survey recently to see how people feel about the use of sunbeds and 72 percent of respondents supported a legislation barring children from tanning salons.

If approved by parliament, the legislation will take effect on January 1, 2011. A similar legislation has already been implemented in a number of European countries.
