New International Airport Considered in South Iceland

The municipal council of Árborg, South Iceland announced possible plans of building an international airport in their community, mbl.is reports. Plans are to build the airport between Selfoss and Stokkseyri in South Iceland, about one hour’s drive from Reykjavík. The council agreed to form a task force to further explore the idea.

Head of Council Ásta Stefánsdóttir says the task force will examine the plausibility of the idea, including examining weather data and determining whether the area has suitable conditions for an airport. Over 90 percent of tourists who visit Iceland pass through the area.
