New Interim CEO Hired at National Hospital

Páll Matthíasson, managing director of the Landspítali National University Hospital’s psychiatric division, has been hired as the hospital’s interim CEO, as announced yesterday. His predecessor, Björn Zoëga, resigned last week.

Björn stated after having discussed the new budget bill, which will be presented when parliament reconvenes today, with Minister of Health Kristján Þór Júlíusson that it was clear that a new hospital will not be constructed any time soon and that he will not be responsible for leading the hospital off the edge, ruv.is reports.

Páll agrees that a new hospital must be built. “It is in fact the natural renewal of very old facilities … Some of these buildings are 80 years old and it’s about time that the hospital’s high-tech division is relocated to new facilities.”

Páll added that his biggest project is to improve the morale among the hospital’s employees. A recent survey concluded that only eight percent of medicine students consider Landspítali as their future workplace.

“Poor job satisfaction has to a large extent to do with the facilities,” stated Páll. “Now we must turn things around, rebuild and develop the services so that they fulfill our patients’ needs as well as possible and so that our employees will be content.”

Páll will serve as CEO until April 1, 2014, when the position will be formally advertised.
