New Icelandic opera

A new Icelandic opera, Skuggaleikur, based on H.C. Andersen’s story “The Shadow,” will premier on 18 November in the Icelandic Opera House.

Skuggaleikur is a full-length opera for adults created by Sjón, who has also written some of Björk’s lyrics. The director is Messíana Tómasdóttir and Karólína Eiríksdóttir is the composer.

The opera features characters such as the Poet, the Shadow, the Goddess and the Princess interpreted by Ásgerdur Júníusdóttir, Ingibjörg Gudjónsdóttir, Eyjólfur Eyjólfsson and Sverrir Gudjónsson.

Skuggaleikur is a parable of a poet who loses his shadow to the Goddess of Poetry. When the shadow returns many years later it has lost all moral sense and gains control over its owner.

The Shadow is one of few stories by H.C. Andersen written for adults. The story is complex and highlights many moral questions.
