New Hotel to be Built near Mývatn

A 3,000-square-meter (32,300-square-feet) hotel will open in the southern part of the Mývatn area, Northeast Iceland, next summer to cater for the increase in tourists to the region.

Hotel rooms in the area will increase by 60 percent with the construction of the hotel.

Hotel manager Margrét Hólm Valsdóttir told ruv.is that there is a real shortage of accommodation in the area. “There have been waiting lists here during the summer, from June to August, and it would definitely be possible to book the hotels two or three times over if it were possible, so there is definitely a need for this.”

The hotel will be as “environmentally-friendly as possible,” Margrét said, explaining that a sewage processing plant will be built to minimize the impact on the surrounding environment.
