New governor appointed at Central Bank of Iceland

Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, reports tha the Prime Minister, Geir H. Haarde, accepted today the resignation of Jón Sigurdsson, Minister for Trade and Industry, governor of the Central Bank of Iceland.

Jón Sigurdsson, a longtime member of the Progressive Party, recently announced he would run for chairman of the Progressive Party this coming fall when Halldór Ásgrímsson retires.

RÚV further reports that the Prime Minister has appointed Ingimundur Fridriksson as governor to replace Jón. The appointment is for seven years, effective as of September 1st. Ingimundur has served as deputy governor of the Central Bank since 1994, and as interim governor in 2002-2003.
