New Film Festival to Launch in Reykjavík

A new film festival, led by Icelandic film director Friðrik Þór Friðriksson, will be launched in Reykjavík this winter, hollywoodreporter.com reports.

The festival aims to showcase the country as a key destination for foreign film and television shoots as well as shine a spotlight on local talent.

The festival was created by the Icelandic Film Makers Association, the Association of Icelandic Film Producers, the Icelandic Actors Association, Women in Film and Television and the Icelandic Playwrights and Screenwriters Association and is funded by the City of Reykjavík and Promote Iceland.

Friðrik’s film Children of Nature (1991) was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Oscar. He also headed the Reykjavík Film Festival, which ran from 1978 to 2001 and founded the production company Icelandic Film Corporation.

The festival launches on February 19, 2015.

In other film festival news, the Reykjavík International Film Festival (RIFF) kicks off on September 25.
