New Exhibition in Reykjavík Museum of Photography

The exhibition “Life Isn’t Just a Game – It Is Also a Bed of Roses” opens in the Reykjavík Museum of Photography today as part of the 2009 Reykjavík Arts Festival. It is a cooperative of the museum and the design and architect department of the Iceland Academy of the Arts.

“It is an exhibition of iconic Icelandic photography from the 1960s. Teenage culture is about to be born after the rock revolution. Fresh winds are blowing. The Icelandic nation has moved from the countryside to the city. It misses the countryside, in fact,” as one of the curators, graphic design professor Gudmundur Oddur Magnússon (a.k.a. Goddur), writes in the catalogue.

“The word ‘design’ is brand-new to the Icelandic language, fresh and unused. A new generation with different attitudes has arrived. They can’t sit in the same way as their parents. They want different chairs. They are teenagers around 1960. They don’t remember the tragedies of World War II. There is spring in their hearts,” Goddur continues.

The exhibition runs through August 30. Admission is free. The other curator is Gudfinna Mjöll Magnúsdóttir.
