New East Iceland Tunnel Underway

The lowest offer for a new tunnel in East Iceland, between Eskifjörður and Neskaupstaður, came from Czech contractor Metrostav and Icelandic Suðurverk: ISK 9.3 billion (USD 80 million, EUR 60 million), as announced on Tuesday. The tunnel is to be completed by the end of 2016.

The old tunnel to Neskaupstaður in the mountain pass Oddsskarð is considered outdated. It only has one lane, is at an altitude of 630 meters and the road on both sides can be hazardous, especially in winter, visir.is reports.

This is the largest transport project to be carried out in Iceland since the banking collapse in 2008. Jón Björn Hákonarson, who chairs the district council of Fjarðabyggð, said he is satisfied that this project, which has long been necessary, will finally be carried out.

The construction of the tunnel between Eskifjörður and Neskaupstaður, which will be 7.5 kilometers, is scheduled to begin next autumn. A tunnel through Vaðlaheiði, between Akureyri and Húsavík, is also being constructed.
