New Director of Icelandic National Broadcaster Hired

“I’m very happy and look forward to facing this new and exciting challenge. The National Broadcasting Service offers many possibilities and the future is bright,” Magnús Geir Þórðarson told Last night he was hired as RÚV, the National Broadcasting Service’s new director. The board’s decision was unanimous.

Magnús has an MBA degree from Reykjavík University as well as a Master’s degree in Theater Studies from the University of Wales. He was director of the Akureyri Theater from the year 2004 until he became director of the Reykjavík City Theater in 2008, a post which he will now be leaving.

With him at the helm, the City Theater has continued to break attendance records.

It is not yet clear when he will begin his work at the National Broadcasting Service. “The transition will be smooth and amicable,” he told “The first few weeks will go into meeting with the staff and learning even more about the operation.”

The position became available after Páll Magnússon resigned in mid-December following the announced that 60 people were to lose their jobs at the broadcaster. In his statement to his staff, he said that he feels that the board of RÚV does not trust him enough.

RÚV is an independent public service broadcaster, formally owned by the Icelandic state. It started operation in 1930. RÚV is financially independent, its principal sources of income being the license fee and revenues from advertisements. RÚV’s income can only be allocated for broadcasting purposes. RÚV operates one television channel and two radio channels that cover the whole of Iceland as well as the website According to the Broadcasting Act the main obligation of RÚV is to promote the Icelandic language, Icelandic history and Iceland’s cultural heritage.
