Ólafur Jóhannesson has been hired as the new coach for Iceland’s men’s football (soccer) team after the Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ) decided not to renew its contract with Eyjólfur Sverrisson in light of recent losses.
KSÍ is currently looking to hire an assistant coach and Jóhannesson said Pétur Pétursson, who has previously coached the football clubs Breidablik in Kópavogur and KR in Reykjavík, was a strong candidate, Fréttabladid reports.
Jóhannesson told mbl.is, that he would try and turn Iceland’s luck around by, among other things, strengthening the team’s defense.
Iceland will play its first game with Jóhannesson as coach against Denmark in Copenhagen on November 21.
