New Chief of Police Appointed to Sudurnes

By Iceland Review

Ólafur K. Ólafsson, Chief of Police and Sheriff in Snaefellsbaer municipality, west Iceland, has been appointed as the new Chief of Police for the southwestern Sudurnes region as of today and until the end of this year.

Ólafsson replaces Jóhann R. Benediktsson who recently resigned from his post out of disagreement with Minister of Justice Björn Bjarnason, following which three other high-ranking police officers in Sudurnes resigned in solidarity with Benediktsson.

Chief Constable at the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police Jón F. Bjartmarz has been appointed as Assistant Chief of Police for Sudurnes, and Halldór Halldórsson, Chief Financial Officer at the Capital Region Police, will also be responsible for financial matters in the Sudurnes jurisdiction until the end of this year.

According to an announcement from the Ministry of Justice, the office of the Sudurnes Chief of Police is open for applications and the new Chief of Police will be hired as of January 1, 2009.
