New Chairman for Reykjavík Energy Appointed

Gudlaugur G. Sverrisson was last week appointed the chairman of the board for Reykjavík Energy (OR), which is owned by Reykjavík City. He is not yet prepared to reveal which policy the company will adopt under his lead.

“I was called to the post with a short notice and I would like to discuss the matter with the mayor, chairman of the city council, the CEO of OR and the board before I say anything about which policy and what emphasis I prefer,” Sverrisson told Fréttabladid.

Sverrisson’s appointment has been criticized by the opposition parties in Reykjavík City Council, among other things because they claim that he has no particular knowledge of energy issues.

Sverrisson however pointed out that he is educated as a fourth-degree mechanician (an engineer in mechanics) and therefore has knowledge of all kinds of equipments and terms related to power plants.

“But the knowledge that I gained from my studies of business administration and economics is the most important qualification,” Sverrisson said. “Others who have been appointed chairman [of OR] have not been criticized this way and therefore I don’t take it very seriously.”
