New Chair Appointed to Iceland’s Glitnir

Vilhjálmur H. Vilhjálmsson, a lawyer, will be appointed chairman of the board of the new state-run Glitnir Bank, replacing Valur Valsson who resigned along with Magnús Gunnarsson, chairman of New Kaupthing, on February 10.

It is unclear who will replace Gunnarsson, but according to Fréttabladid’s sources, Helga Jónsdóttir, who temporarily took over the chair of Kaupthing will not continue as the bank’s chairperson.

When Valsson and Gunnarsson announced their resignations, Minister of Finance Steingrímur J. Sigfússon asked them to remain chairmen until the general meetings of the banks, but they refused.

Sigfússon was criticized in parliament for losing control of the banks.
