In the early morning of July 8th, a small glacial flood from volcano Katla swept away the Múlakvísl river bridge. The Ring Road was disconnected at the height of the tourist season but in just ten days the Road Administration managed to build a single lane temporary bridge, connecting east Iceland with the south part of the country.The plan was to build a new bridge this year But the new bridge will now not be built until next year as there are still small earthquakes in the area and more research needs to be conducted before construction begins, Hreinn Haraldsson CEO of the Icelandic Road Administration told daily Morgunblaðið. The cost of the new bridge is expected to be ISK 1 billion (USD 8 million, GBP 5,09 million).
