New bill on RÚV proposed

By Iceland Review

A new draft of a bill about limitation of advertisement on Icelandic national broadcaster RÚV was passed by the Educational Board in parliament yesterday.

Board chairman Sigurdur Kári Kristjánsson said the bill includes two major changes in RÚV’s operations: A ban of online advertisements and a budget limitation on new programs RÚV creates. Rú reports.

Currently, advertisements provide RÚV with 10 percent of its income, about ISK 100 million (EUR 1.1 million, USD 1.5 million), which will not change despite the ban of online advertisements.

The bill draft will be submitted to the parliament next week. Kristjánsson hopes that the bill will be passed and put into effect shortly after Christmas.
