New Annual Bike Race Around Iceland

By Iceland Review

WOW Cyclothon is a new non-stop relay bike race around Iceland held annually in June, this year between June 19 and 22. Registration is open to everyone but there will be a 72 hour cut-off time.

“The event may be the ticket for someone wanting an alternative to the standard tour to Iceland, why not get a few friends together and do the island in two or three days? You may also find it compelling that you would be riding Iceland during the summer solstice, and the period when, in Iceland, the sun never sets,” a press release states.

The race is a relay race around the entire country on the Ring Road, highway 1A. An average speed of 30 kilometers per hour will bring teams home in less than 48 hours.

Each team consists of four bikers and one or two drivers. Teams arrange for their own support vehicle. Only one support vehicle is allowed, as are UCI approved bicycles. Disc wheels are not allowed for safety reasons.

WOW Air is the competition’s main sponsor and will supply prizes for the winning teams, one flight ticket for every member of the winning female and male team. Save the Children Iceland is the competition’s charitable cause.
