Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II released yesterday and, in addition to already making a critical splash, is set in Viking Age Iceland. The long-awaited sequel to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice also reportedly references Viking Age culture and Norse mythology.

Icelanders in the cast

In addition to the landscapes–already being described as “absolutely gorgeous“–the game developers, Ninja Theory, also took the effort to include Icelanders in the cast.

These include Guðmundur Ingi Þorvaldsson, who also starred in Assassins Creed Valhalla, as well as Aldís Amah Hamilton, known for her performances in the mini-series Katla and as co-creator of another television series, Svörtu Sandar.

A brutal journey of survival

The game is described by the developers as “a brutal journey of survival through the myth and torment of Viking Iceland. Intent on saving those who have fallen victim to the horrors of tyranny, Senua faces a battle of overcoming the darkness within and without”.

Its predecessor was nominated for and won numerous awards, and this newest game is already getting rave reviews, being called “a masterclass in technical and thematic maturity“, “a spellbinding adventure packed with cinematic spectacle and story surprises“, and “not only a grand production, but one that delivers its message with absolute power and verve“.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is available on Steam.
