Netflix Illegal but Hugely Popular in Iceland

One in four Icelanders aged 18 to 29 have a Netflix account, the American provider or on-demand internet streaming media, despite it being illegal in the country.

Netflix has not signed a contract to stream its content in Iceland, weekly business paper Viðskiptablaðið reports.

The market in Iceland is so small that Spotify is the only large international streaming service to have signed a contract to distribute its content legally in Iceland.

Ari Edwald, director of media company 365, said to daily Fréttablaðið that the government was looking the other way in regards to the illegal broadcasting.
