Nearly a third of suspects in remedial custody foreigners

Six of the 20 suspects currently in remedial custody in Iceland are foreign citizens, according to a report in Fréttabladid today. They cannot be extradited to their home countries until their cases have gone through the courts, and even then it is unclear whether they will serve their sentences at home or in Iceland. Most of the foreigners are in custody on drug-related charges, and some on assault charges. The majority are from Lithuania.

The State Prison Administration of Iceland was forced to turn down a request by police for remedial custody earlier this week because all Icelandic prisons are full.
