Many parts of Iceland remained dry for the National Day public holiday yesterday, as the Republic of Iceland celebrated its 70th birthday.
It rained quite a lot in Reykjavík and the rest of the southwest, but this did not put people off going outside to celebrate.
Central Reykjavík was alive with bouncy castles, family yoga, a sailing competition, giant chess and many other activities and exhibitions for young and old.
The new Reykjavík City Artist was also named at a ceremony in Höfði House (pictured). The latest City Artist is the musician Gunnar Þórðarson, who officially received his recognition from the brand new mayor, Dagur B. Eggertsson.
“It is of course a real honor for me. I absolutely did not expect this and am just very thankful,” Gunnar said at the ceremony.
Dagur B. Eggertsson responded, saying that the city is also proud to be able to honor Gunnar in this manner.
“It is of course really amazing that this should be one of my first official duties as mayor. And it is especially amazing if one looks at Gunnar’s portfolio, as he has been a part of all Icelanders’ lives for so long,” Vísir.is reports Dagur as saying.
