National Budget Debated in Parliament: Live Stream

The first debate on the 2018 budget began today in Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament, Vísir reports.

Parliament reconvened following their summer break on Tuesday, when Benedikt Jóhannesson, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, introduced the budget to the Ministry of Finance. It is expected that the national treasury will yield a surplus of ISK 44 billion (USD 415 million/EUR 349 million).

The opposition and even cabinet members may propose significant changes to the budget. Significant issues include the lack of an increase in funding for the National University Hospital of Iceland and reductions to the old-age and disability pension funds.
