Narrowly Escaped Construction Crane

Two teenage girls narrowly escaped as a construction crane collapsed beside them in downtown Reykjavík today.

“We sat on the bench, eating hot dogs. Then wooden boards began swaying above us; then I saw the crane coming, too. I screamed at Tinna and we ran,” Bryndís Bridde told RÚV.

Bryndís was sitting on a bench beside her friend Tinna Marína Sigurðardóttir by Bæjarins bestu hot dogs stand, on the corner of Tryggvagata and Hafnarstræti, when a construction crane came tumbling down beside them. A load of timber being hoisted landed in the parking lot between the restaurant Hornið and Bæjarins bestu.

“We were very scared and didn’t know what was going on,” Bryndís admitted. “It [the crane] turned the table we were sitting at upside down. It was right by us.”

It is not known what went wrong, but according to Róbert Róbertsson from the Administration of Occupational safety and Health, the case is being investigated.

Bæjarins Bestu is reportedly closed, because the load from the crane blocked its doors, forcing an employee to get out through a window.
