The Icelandic Naming Committee has rejected the names Zelda, Zion, and Theo but approved the names Maríon and Sólúlfur for male children, Vísir reports. The three rejected names were denied on the grounds that their spelling does not conform with the Icelandic alphabet.
The Icelandic Naming Committee maintains an official register of approved Icelandic names and governs the introduction of new names into the register. Its value is widely debated in Iceland. A bill currently before the Icelandic parliament proposes dissolving the committee and slackening naming laws.
