Mysterious Smoke Extends from the Ground in Reykjavík

By Iceland Review

Smoke was noticed rising from the ground near the Laugardalshöll sports arena in central Reykjavík shortly before midnight yesterday. The police were notified of the smoke who called out an employee of Reykjavík Energy in case a hot-water pipe had started leaking.

However, the employee confirmed that no hot-water pipes were located in the vicinity. The earth was warm and when police officers dug into the soil with a shovel, chunks surfaced which looked like charred remains of wood, reports.

The police called the fire department and fire fighters cooled the area with water. There were no indications that the heat was caused by human intervention and when the police officers inspected the area later in the night, the heat had not reappeared.

The case remains unsolved.
