On Saturday the state prosecutor was informed that the murder case of Hannes Thór Helgason is now considered closed. A 23 year old man, Gunnar Rúnar Sigurthórsson, has confessed that he is the killer. Evidence at the murder scene and blood stains on the shoes of the suspect lead the police to arrest the suspect. The murder weapon has not been discovered, but police suspect that it is a large knife, since the body had multiple stab wounds. Police are searching for the knife in the harbor of Hafnarfjördur.

The confessed killer is thought to have acted alone. He will undergo psychiatric tests for his mental health. The murder took place at the home of the deceased on Sunday morning from five to ten o’clock. Hannes Thór was the manager of a chocolate factory in Iceland, owned by his father. According to mbl.is police would not comment on a motive for the murder.

Gunnar Rúnar was originally put in police custody shortly shortly after the murder, but was released a day later, because of lack of evidence .
Last year Gunnar Rúnar put a video on Youtube expressing his love to a girl who was the victim’s girlfriend. Many expressed support for Gunnar on the web, but later he explained in another video that the girl had “passed”. According to his Facebook-page Gunnar had been to parties at the house of Hannes, the victim.
According to the report on mbl.is the victim’s girlfriend spent the night of the murder at the killer’s house. Other reports have said that he drove her to the house of Hannes Thór at noon on Sunday. When the girlfriend come in she found Hannes Thór dead by multiple wounds.
The investigation took about three weeks and more than thirty policemen were involved. About 100 people were interrogated.
